PARTIALS: REPLACING MISSING TEETH
Do all partial dentures require visable metal clasps?
No. Thanks to modern technology and materials, partials can now be made with the strength of
metal, but without unsightly clasps. Two types of partials that I commonly prescribe are the
Virginia partial and the FRS (Flexible Retention System). Both are constructed for a more snug
fit, and are colored to match gum tissue.
What if I need a partial and only have front teeth? Will I have a clasp in the front?
No. The problem is commonly solved by using ERA attachments on a crowned tooth and the partial.
The principle is similar to snaps on a shirt. The crown is made with the attachment on the back,
and the partial is made with the complimentary attachment. They fit together on the back or
tongue side. This gives a snug fit without clasps.
